During the reign of the Shogun and samurai strict restrictions on travel were places on the population to control the risk of any sort of uprising. Checkpoints were established at strategic locations along the few roads connecting most of the country. The most important checkpoint along the most vital road was here in Lake Ashi.
The posts ensured that women and children were not traveling freely. In an effort to ensure loyalty the Shogun required distant feudal lords to keep a place of residence in Tokyo, and even keep their children or wives there.
